I thought it happened any time you lost (not just losing to a lower ranked team).

Yes everytime you lose but losing to weaker has WAY more impact

 If you lose a game, you lose morale.

if you lose morale, your players temporarily lose their averages due to less morale. Bring back up morale and it will bring back up their average.
