It really depends on your formation and team average, but I use man to man but mix it with with zonal...so I guess for me man-to-man is good but zonal can be effective as well

I believe, with using my prior knowledge, that Zonal keeps your players in the generally same position that the formation says. Using Man to man, your players will go out of position (Whoever's closest to the ball) to defend the player. 24/02/2013 00:01

What I have seen:

(full) Zonal advantage: Players stay in position so if you pack the defense for example they will keep that wall up

(full) Zonal disadvantage: Only one player really moves and sometimes you will find that if the opponent goes through the defense, everyone but one player is trying to stop him at the time while the others will just stay behind watching. They don't mark anyone either so if your defense has multiple holes, you will get frustrated seeing the opponent use the same tactic to pass through every single time.

(full) Man-Marking advantage: All the players try to do something. They all move around with some of them trying to mark someone, others attacking the guy with the ball and others kinda filling holes in your defense.

(full) Man-Marking disadvantage: It will mess up any formation you use. Defenders are all over the place and most of them are nowhere near the position assigned to them. Not all of them are marking someone either so I wouldn't advice going full man marking if you don't have fast defenders. Since sometimes a player may be man marking someone offside, this could destroy your offside trap.

Remember, this is just my opinion....
