short passes means your players play short passes
Pros- keep possession better
Cons- if your player is a bit far from his closest team mate he wont pass and might lose the ball

Counter attack means they will play longer passes
Pros: can catch a defence out of position with a long ball from defs to fwds
Cons: a lot of long balls get intercepted or can lead to offsides

Another con to short passes...defenders tend to pass to each other A LOT...and defenders are really bad at passing, so you end up with a lot of turnovers very close to your goal. 01/09/2013 03:30

for Me i Use 90 , Cause i Beat OTs and Have a Decent "Speeded" CF that Could Beat Defenders.
For Low Speed you Should Flunctuate 'em 50 or 60 to Counter-Attacks.

@bows & @sabre defined the differences well. Play beta friendlies and try out the differences - say set your tactic to say 90% counter one game, then 90% short passes the next. Formation plays a role also, as was earlier mentioned. If you look at stats (which can be and are misleading in the SM world), it can be an indication of how a team plays.

And as @sabre cautioned, it really really really sucks watching defenders dink around passing to each other in front of goal. It just invites trouble. The sim seems to reward turnovers in front of goal (ie fwds that take the ball whilst in the opposing box tend to score rather frequently), so get the ball out. Again this can be part of formation also.
