Right. So after todays result, which team looks the best given their performance this season and the relative strength of their opponent? United v Swansea? Arsenal v. Palace? Liverpool v Southampton? Newcastle v City? Burnley v Chelsea? For my part, I don't think Burnley was any real test of Chelsea. I'm not sure if that means anything or not, however, many think that Chelsea is the front runner to win the title. United did not look very good against Swansea. And a loss at home as well. Enough said. Arsenal pulled off a win at home but against a manager-less team who nearly had them beat. City handled a stubborn Newcastle, 2-0 with both goals in stoppage time. Patient City performance, strong Newcastle performance, both teams go away feeling good. And as for Liverpool, they won against a determined Southampton side. Given Southampton's dealings in the transfer window, perhaps many expected a rout. From my perspective, the Reds controlled the game very well when they pressed. The entire side seemed more patient and well less excited than last year, perhaps more like a methodical German side than the underdog runner-up of last year. In the long run, this is probably a good thing. Verdict? United are not title contenders this year, even with the absence of CL football. Unless there is a major problem at the other big four, United don't make the top four this season. Arsenal finish in the top four but not with the title. The race goes to Chelsea, City, and Liverpool - he who wins the most away games between those three, wins the title. |
