Below I have written a detailed explanation of the process. Hopefully it's clear enough to follow and answers any questions you had and resolves your frustration with Advanced Formations.

However, before reading further you might want to check You Tube. With this game being several years old, surely one of the people at the developers, or one of the dozens upon dozens of Fiscals, Admin staff, whoever or maybe one of the thousand of gamers that have played this game may have had the ability and intuition to create a simple video!! Sadly, I don't know how to do this, so this is best I can do...

The FORMATION screen is divided into three sections. On the left, at the top is the CURRENT FORMATIONS box. Below that is the COPY FORMATION box. To the right is the player/pitch box.

You can create and customise ten different formations in CURRENT FORMATIONS.

BASIC AND ADVANCED FORMATIONS

There are two types of formation; BASIC and ADVANCED. The BASIC formation has your players move in a rigid formation. The ADVANCED formation allows you to fully customise the position of your players on the pitch in relation to where the football is during a match.

You can tell what type of formation is in the list in the CURRENT FORMATIONS box because in brackets beside the name of the formation will be the words ADVANCED or BASIC.

RENAME A FORMATION

You can change the name of the formations listed in the CURRENT FORMATIONS box by clicking on the pencil icon situated to the right of the formation’s name. Once you have typed the name you wish the formation to be called, click on the SAVE button that has appeared where the pencil icon was. Next to the pencil icon is a cross. Click on this to delete this formation.

CREATE AN ADVANCED FORMATION

Click on the first formation in the list in CURRENT FORMATIONS. When you have done this its name, the pencil icon and cross beside it will be highlighted in a pink box. With this formation now active, everything you change in the player/pitch box, on the righthand side will relate to this formation.

Before you make any changes to the player positions you need to ensure that the formation you are about to work on is an Advanced Formation in order to fully customise the formation.

To the right of the CURRENT FORMATIONS box is the player/pitch box which shows the position of all of the players in your team. In the top right hand corner of the player/pitch box are two red boxes with the words BASIC and ADVANCED. Click on the ADVANCED box (it will turn pink). You have now changed the formation you are about to create to an Advanced Formation, which gives you complete control over the position of all your team (minus the goalkeeper who is always automatically positioned). Next, save your progress so far. To do this click on the SAVE button situated below the CURRENT FORMATIONS box and above the COPY FORMATION box.

CUSTOMISE YOUR ADVANCED FORMATION

You are now ready to designate and control the movements of your players on the pitch.

In the centre of the image of the player/pitch box is a small image of a football. This demonstrates that you are working on an Advanced Formation (which is confirmed with the words Advanced, in brackets, next to the name of the formation in the CURRENT FORMATIONS box, and highlighted in the top right corner of player/pitch box).

With the ball in this centre position you can move the players around on the pitch to set up your base formation. This will be their starting positions, and their designated role (i.e.. CF, centre forward, LIM, Left-inner Midfield and so on). Only when the football image is in the centre of the pitch can you change the role of a player. For example, if the formation shows that you have an LIM (Left-inner Midfielder) and you wish the player to be a LM (Left Midfielder), by moving the player to the left his role will change from LIM to LM. The role of the player will change automatically as you move players around the pitch.

NOTE; you can only have two players of the same position on the pitch.

Once you are happy with your base formation click on the SAVE button. As before this is situated between the CURRENT FORMATIONS box and the COPY FORMATION box.

DESIGNATE HOW EVERY PLAYER MOVES AROUND THE PITCH

Now you’re ready to designate where every player will move to, on the pitch, in relation to where the football is. This is a very easy, but a time consuming process. This is an extremely important aspect of the game, not to mention the game’s greatest feature.

The football image currently sits in the centre of the pitch image. It can be moved anywhere around the pitch. The football pitch is conveniently divided into 36 squares. When the ball is moved the whole team move.

What you are about to do is move the ball into each of the 36 squares, and in each of those positions move every single player to the position you wish him to be when the ball is at that spot on the pitch. You are effectively mapping out where every player will move to during a match.

First off, move the football from the centre of the pitch to the next square (up, down, left or right, it doesn’t matter). Notice that all of the players moved together in a rigid formation as if held by an invisible force. They move this way because they are still moving as they would in a Basic Formation.

With the football placed in whichever square you have chosen you can now move each player individually to the position you wish him to be when the football is on that spot of the pitch. Really, it’s that simple!

However, as you can position the ball into 36 different positions you will eventually have positioned all 10 outfield players along with it. It’s a simple but laborious process. Don’t forget to Save regularly. If you wish to do this over a couple of sessions, or come back later and tinker and perfect your Advanced Formation, you can of course, again don’t forget to save when you have finished.

At any point you can move the ball around and see how all the players move. This can be useful and help you keep track of the general flow and movement of the team and help you spot any potential weaknesses in your Advanced Formation.

It’s important to remember that the positions you set for your players are only guides and the TACTICS you set could have players close down opposition and move away from their designated position. They will of course always return to the position you set, eventually. Equally, if an advanced player has the ball and is unable to pass to another player he will continue to dribble and move further out of position.

Once you have finished an Advanced Formation be sure to watch the next few matches to see if you can improve your Advanced Formation to avoid weaknesses and minimise gaps in the formation that are being exploited by opposing teams.

TO CHANGE A PLAYER’S ROLE WITHIN A FORMATION

Once you have a complete Advanced Formation you may wish to replace one type of player for another, due to injury or to rest a player. This is very simple and extremely quick.

Highlight the formation you wish to amend by clicking on its name in the CURRENT FORMATIONS box. Ensure the football is in the centre of the pitch in the players/pitch box. Now move the desired player to a position that changes his role to the one you wish him to be. When you are happy with the changes, click Save!

Remember that it’s vital that the football is in the centre of the pitch because you cannot change the players role with it in any other position.

COPY FORMATION

The COPY FORMATION box allows you duplicate any previous formations you have created.

It’s a simple (although slightly unwieldy) method to allow you to adjust a previous formation – perhaps to change the shape of the midfield or attacking positions.

To create a duplicate of a formation, first click on the name of the formation you wish to change in CURRENT FORMATIONS (or create a new one). With that formation’s name highlighted, click on the formation you wish to duplicate in the COPY FORMATION box. This has now made an exact duplicate of that formation.

The COPY FORMATION box is effectively a duplicate list of the formations in CURRENT FORMATIONS. Once you have created your duplicate formation and made the desired changes, Save it. And now this new formation will appear in the COPY FORMATION box and allow you to duplicate this new one if needed.

HOPEHYEHMIH 1,
No problem. I'm glad it helps. Having read through it today I spotted a few areas that I could improve on and have made a couple of minor alterations (although the information is exactly the same of course). You do realise that now if you lose a game it's more likely to be your fault rather than just the teams!!!

Acebrain28,
It needed a couple of minor alterations, and I think it's a little bit easier to follow today. But, sure, if its helped Mr Hope out then it's worth it.
