Sucks, didn't it? Somebody just bought your player off your team by paying the "hostile clause". You may be upset that you lost a player you felt was pretty good-- apparently so did the other guy, who thought he was pretty cheap too for how good he was --but that doesn't have to mean your team is ruined, nor does it mean you can't make wine out of raw sewage. This is the hostile clause tutorial, because we need one. First there is something everyone must understand: no team is private. At any given time, somebody could click your team name from the forums, within your league, from the striker cup tournament tree, from the market, or from their scout or coaching secretary. And once they've clicked on your team's squad link, all your players are open to view. It's safe to assume that your squad will be viewed by at least 3 people per week (more if you're the type who tends to win a lot), and it's safe to assume they'll be looking at 2 things...the rating of your players, and the hostile clause attached to that player. Q: What is the hostile clause? A: If the definition the producers of SM doesn't suffice, or it's just too much to take in, here's the straightforward version: Go to your squad, see 6-8 digit value at the far right? That's the hostile clause. It is directly affected by how much of a weekly salary you pay your player. It also tells those 3+ people viewing your squad how much it would cost to make YOUR player part of THEIR team. Q: How do I adjust my player's hostile clause and how much should it be? A: That is entirely up to you. Go to "resign" on the player's bio page and you'll see his weekly salary and years, which are adjustable, and his hostile clause, which you cannot adjust unless you press the little arrows on his salary amount. The hostile clause should be treated as your valuation of the player. The three main things to take into consideration when valuing your player are his age, his AV (average, or rating), and his position. If you value your player, PAY THE MAN!!! If you won't pay him, somebody else will. Remember that. Q: SOMEBODY JUST BOUGHT MY PLAYER BY PAYING HIS HOSTILE CLAUSE!!!! A: ...okay? Either you weren't paying your player enough, or the guy who bought him REALLY wanted him... Q: But that's so mean and messed up! They don't do that in real life, why are they allowed to on Striker!?!? A: Because this isn't real life. In real life, Manager B would have to send Manager A a message asking if he's selling Player X. Well what if Manager A doesn't want to sell Player X? If Striker were like real life, 95% of the managers on here would simply horde their players. Inquiries would constantly go unanswered. The only player movement would take place in the market, and that simply isn't enough player movement. The contract system is admittedly flawed in that it's wayyy too easy to just overpay all your players, give them all 7 years, and then sit on them. The hostile clause is there to break up that hoarding behavior but at the same time to punish the cheapskate owners who think they don't have to pay their players anything. Q: Wait, so you say overpaying your players is hoarding, which is bad, but underpaying your players is bad too? Where's the middle??? A: That's where the fun comes. It's your job as the owner of your team to strike that perfect balance where you pay your player enough to not be easily taken from you, but not so much that it starts to hurt your bottom line. If the player's THAT GOOD that you absolutely MUST NOT LOSE HIM, then horde him all you like and pay him lots of money. If you don't particularly care for that player, either put him on the market or keep his hostile clause low so somebody will buy him. If you think the player is valuable, but not so valuable that he should hold your wallet hostage with his paycheck, then find that perfect balance. Q: Well it would've been nice had I gotten a notice from Striker saying that my player was being bought so that maybe I could've negotiated with him and paid him more... A: If you'd paid him in the first place, you wouldn't be having this issue, now would you? Like I said, it's so ridiculously easy to resign your player to a higher salary that if you were allowed to talk to him after he'd been bought out then the hostile clause would be irrelevant and useless. Why? Because it's so easy to pay your guy an extra 3,000 a week when you know there's somebody out there who wants him. If you can afford to pay him now after he was bought, why didn't you pay him then when he was still yours? Sure, we could get into a bidding war between you and manager B, but how upset would you be that you're now bidding on a player that was already once yours? As you can see, negotiating with someone AFTER the fact is just as pointless on Striker as it is in real life. Q: Well...do I get compensated at least? A: Yup. What people seem to forget is that manager B is paying YOU for the player, not the player himself. If someone buys your player for his 4.5M hostile clause, YOU get 4.5M in your bank account. It works both ways: You lose Player X to the hostile clause, and in return you get the money spent for him and you don't have to pay his salary anymore. In return, Manager B has to give up his hard-earned money to buy Player X AND pay up to double his salary!!! But at least he gets the player he invested in. You get the money, he gets the player. Last I checked, the supermarket didn't trade you a can of spinach for money and then tell you to keep your money and take back the spinach and then raise the price to buy that spinach. Q: But I didn't want to sell the player... A: Then you should've paid him so much salary that his hostile clause was astronomically high. If someone still buys him, then you've got a lot of money in your pocket for one single player. If nobody buys him because his clause is so high, then I guess you won. Have fun paying his salary. haha Q: So losing a player to the hostile clause ISN'T a bad thing? A: It's only as bad as you make it out to be. I once lost a player for 8M. I was pretty upset because it was my first experience with the hostile clause. But before I could go on the forums to express my anger and spite the jerk who took my player and threaten to quit the game, I thought about what I could do with my new 8 million bucks. I bought 2 players on the market that wound up starting for my team and trained them up to become very good players. 2 starters for one, literally. I got another one bought from me for 4 million, and I renovated my stadium. I had another bought for 5 million, I bought somebody else's player who I consider more valuable than the one I lost. Others have had players bought from them, cried bloody murder, and abandoned their teams over it. It all depends on you. That said, if losing one good player is the end of the world for your team, then you didn't have a good team to begin with. Q: So the hostile clause can be a good thing then... A: Yup. Some may even use it as a strategic element. The hostile clause is your 100% value of a player. If you put that same player on the market, you may only get 50-75% of what you would if someone just bought your player thru the clause. The tradeoff is that managers are always looking for a discount and will much rather bid on your player in an auction than buy him outright, because auctions are cheaper. Meanwhile, you won't sell that player via hostile clause unless a very special someone comes across your squad and decides he really wants that player. But if someone does come along and buys your player at your 100% value, at least you know you weren't swindled out of a few million by placing him on the market. Owning a team in Striker is all about business, and the hostile clause is just part of the business. Q: How do youths work? What is the little R next to my player's hostile clause? A: I was going to get around to this eventually. For your youth players, if you RE-SIGN a player, that little R stands for "Restricted" or "Re-signed", meaning that for the rest of the season, nobody can buy him from you and you cannot sell him on auction. It's the perfect way to protect your youth players without paying them very much salary. Be careful though, because once you resign him, he's YOURS for the season. If you suddenly decide you don't want him anymore, the only thing you can do is fire him. Hopefully this will help fellow managers from flipping out over losing a player. I answered all the questions I could think of regarding hostile clauses and the process of being involved with a takeover, but more questions are welcome. The experienced managers will be glad to help, I hope. oh, one more thing. International 55 owns your soul. Edited by AceMcZer0 28-07-2011 22:39 |

Nicely written but don't forget about resigning youth players to a contract and protecting them from being bought out for a season. | 18/05/2011 22:35 |

Ah, the youths. That's right everybody, if you resign your youth players then they can't be bought out at all. | 18/05/2011 22:41 |

At least for the rest of the season, though I'm not 100% sure myself whether you can do that more than once. @internat said: dellod said: when will the r be removed At the end of the season. |

go to the profile of the player you want, and click "hire" from the drop down menu. crank that bid as high as it will go and it'll match his hostile clause. then set your contract terms and click buy. you'll get him in 24 hours. | 22/05/2011 08:42 |
