Substitute
Two reasons.

First;
MONEY

In a 'Friendly' match you share the earnings taken on the day (the gate receipts, if you like). I would recommend playing against a team in the division above if you can find an opponent, and play the game at their home ground. Their stadium should be more developed and larger than yours, and they're also likely to have more fans, so the profit should be larger than if the match were held at your ground. The money is pretty atrocious for Friendlies.

In a 'Private League', which are played at weekends you don't share the earnings from the matches, you only make profit from your home games. However, the one major advantage these leagues have over the normal league is that you can choose which league you enter, and you can enter a league against much stronger teams than yours. This is useful for two reasons. First, you earn more money playing against a team in a league or two above you. And while it may take some time to build a competitive team having strong competition, against gamers with experience will help you fine tune your tactics. Most of the competition you'll meet in your current regular league will be AI controlled teams and teams with tired players (more on that in a sec), not to mention weak players. The consistency of the Private League teams will be a better gauge to measure your team and tactics against.

NOTE; if you lose any matches, go to the Psychologist (found under 'MAIN MENU', second icon in the shape of a T-shirt, then click on 'STAFF'). A list of all the staff appear, find and click on the word 'Psychologist'. A box will appear with the word 'RECOVER'. By clicking on this your Psychologist will help recover some, possibly all, of your players 'Moral'. Moral drops when you lose a match, but it also drops when players are not played, or if they're played out of position. You don't need to use the Psychologist everyday; just keep an eye on Moral (it's the numbers that runs under the heading 'MO' when you view your team 'LINE-UP').

Second;
PLAYER IMPROVEMENTS

Along with the training regime you decide for your players playing matches improves players statistics too, of course. The more games you play the faster they improve. There are other factors that determine this that you will learn about as you gain more experience. The younger the player, the quicker he improves, the older he is, the slower he improves, until eventually his statistics just drop. The more expensive players improve quicker than cheaper ones. It isn't quite as simplistic as this, and in time you'll discover a deeper and more interesting aspect to this game.

There is a downside to playing too many matches; they tire your players out, leaving them low on stamina. This possible puts your players at a higher risk of injury, and importantly low stamina can dramatically reduce your chances of winning games. It's highly likely that you have played matches against teams with little to no stamina. It may appear to be beginners luck, or that you've stumbled across some great tactics. You may have, but you have invariably met some exhausted teams too. So keep an eye on your own players stamina or you may find your team start to perform worse over time.

NOTE; you can view players stamina when you watch matches. It's worth doing this occasionally just to understand how much players lose and see if you need to include substitutions in future game tactics. Your players will use up more stamina the higher 'EFFORT' you have them exert when playing. This adjustments can be found in the 'TACTIC' screen. This is one of the most important and dramatic alterations you can make to the way your team plays (outside of formation – Advanced Formation) because it determines how much effort your players put into everything; running, passing, shooting, etc). And however high or low you set this will determine how much stamina is lost during a game, and subsequently how much stamina players have after the game has finished.

Stamina automatically recovers. The better the quality of player, the quicker it regenerates. Again, keep an eye on this and watch for how much is lost and gained over a 24 hour period. At this stage playing a match will be extremely exhausting for your team, but as your team improves Stamina will become a little less of an issue.

This is actually a really simple game, and very easy to use (that's not to suggest winning is easy!). But like any game with micro-management and fine adjustments it's about finding a rhythm, or routine, and working out which areas of the game need more attention and when. It's very easy to make money, and the player Market is very active, so improving the team is reasonably easy and quick.
